3 Ways to Update Your Casual Wardrobe This Summer

Now that the world is dressing again, do you find yourself not knowing what to do with your Dress Casual attire? Does wearing dark slacks, solid white or blue dress shirts and dark blazer make you feel either a little over dressed or even stuffy? It’s certainly not quite as cool compared to what your peers are wearing. It’s time to listen to your gut which is telling you to try new clothing options. It will involve breaking a lot of rules you were taught when you initially entered the business world.

Navy: Every Man’s Best Friend

This outfit epitomizes the updated Dress Casual style. Navy is easily a great masculine color and looks great on everyone. The jacket is unstructured and soft shouldered with patch pockets. Flap pockets and big shoulder pads are too serious and stiff for the Dress Casual style. The tight crewneck with banded bottom and sleeve replaces the dress shirt and shows you can be comfortable yet remain stylish. Dark denim trousers can’t miss and when you find a pair you enjoy wearing, you should invest in multiple. Not to be overlooked, a low-profile loafer in suede or leather completes the look.

Summertime

Whether it is your excuse to wear brighter color jackets, a great pair of white trousers, or you love linen, summertime is always a fun time to do dress casual! Now let’s start with the color palette: I am in love with all 3 of these colors as not only are they the color story you didn’t know you had to have, but they all individually play great with your wardrobe’s basics of 50 shades of navy and gray. Now I know a lot of you are thinking that this looks eerily similar to how you may have dressed in the past for Dress Casual, but let me point out a few key differences. First, look at how the shoes are more sneaker than loafer, the shirt is fine linen with texture which gives it a bit more compared to a flat dress shirt, and lastly look at how soft and easy the sports jackets lines are in contrast to the rigidness of stiff shoulder pads and squarer cuts from the past.

The Shirt Jacket

The Overshirt is the updated answer to the sport jacket your father wore and the third piece you need to achieve the DRESS in Dress Casual. Perforated suede as shown above easily gives you the texture to take your Dress Casual up a level. Another option is a linen cotton blend jacket to add a level of sophistication. Pair this with a knitwear tight crew neck or some form of chambray or cotton linen blend button up. Regarding trousers, a 5 pocket chino or dark denim are the best options. A dress sneaker completes the look to achieve the Dress Casual look.
